2016; A Year in (Book) Review & 2017 ULTIMATE TBR
So, I have a list of books that I wanted to read in 2016. And I decided to do a follow up blog post to see what I've done this year. I can't believe that it's 2017. I still think it's 2014 and I'm still in high school. And I have my 2017 TBR for you which hopefully I manage to actually get all read this year!
I haven't done a good job of reading what was on my TBR in 2016, I'll be honest. I just got sidetracked with reading other things (see The Mortal Instruments). But I did read some of the books on my list.
1. The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner
I tried to read this series. And from memory I got through 30 pages before I just couldn't read anymore. The slang and language the character's use is so confusing. I don't understand what they are trying to say and I feel as if I need a glossary of terms to understand their slang. Maybe I will try to read this book again but right now I prefer the movies.
2. To All The Boys I've Loved Before Series by Jenny Han
I read The Summer I Turned Pretty series and it was like the freakin best thing I've ever read. So I can't believe that I haven't read this series yet. It's definitely back on my 2017 TBR.
3. More novels by Jodi Picoult
Of the novels by Jodi Picoult that I tried to read, I enjoyed two of them. And the rest I was just like "no". And did not look to go read the rest of them. I just found some of her stories over complicated. Maybe I just have too simple of a mind. But I had to stop and think whenever I read something major. I do enjoy some of her books though but I didn't read any of her books.
4. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
I wasn't feeling the creepy guy, psycho-analytical vibe this year. And that's all I have to say about this.
5. All of Rainbow Rowell's novels
I did read Attachments this year and I really enjoyed it. I love Rainbow's writing and I could read it all day. I find her so funny in her writing and I love love her books. So I'm counting this as a tick!
6. The Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver
I blame this on my friend Sarah that I didn't read this series this year! I kept going to order it myself but she kept saying that she would get it for me but it took her until October to get me the series this year. And I am so annoyed because they got rid of the original book covers so I have one different book cover out of the three books I have.
7. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
One of the greatest book I have ever read! It is so moving and entertaining. I think it is such an important book in terms of the themes that it covers and the events that go on. The fact that it's set in racist America in the 1960's is such big deal. I definitely think it's important for people to draw correlations from things that happen in this book and the time frame it's in, to the things that are happening in our time period right now.
8. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
This is the first book I read this year! And it's actually really fast paced for a contemporary novel which really surprised me. There was nothing really out of this world about this book in terms of big events that happened, but I think what I liked about this book was seeing how characters dealt with their life going wrong and learning from their mistakes and fixing them.
9. My True Love Gave to Me edited by Stephanie Perkins
When the sequel to this, Summer Days Summer Nights came out, I knew that I had to get it together and read this collection of short stories before my time was up. I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked all of the short stories (some more than others) and I was really surprised that even though this appears like it would be more contemporary, some of the authors got a little bit fantasy up in here and I was like dang! I have to admit that I did like Summer Days Summer Nights more. But that's because I love summer.
4/9 books read! That's almost half! And a TBR is just a guide for me. Like most plans in my life, once I get into it, shit hits the fans and any plan I have is just a distant memory.
Now I have my 2017 Ultimate TBR

Now I have my 2017 Ultimate TBR
In no particular order;
1. The To All The Boys I've Loved Before series by Jenny Han
THIS WAS ON MY 2016 TBR I'M SO DISAPPOINTED IN MYSELF. I wish I had a great excuse as to why I didn't read this series in 2016 but I don't. I read the whole Summer I Turned Pretty Series in 48 hours. I loved it so much to the point that I was in tears by then end of it because it was over. So I know that I'll really enjoy To All The Boy's I've Loved Before. And I NEED to read it this year!
2. The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken
I read the first book of this series in 2016 and I was surprised at how much I liked this dystopian series. And I'm too invested now to not read the rest of the series. The first book took me a while to get into but once I was into it I couldn't stop reading it. Hopefully I'll read them soon rather than putting it off and then forget to read them.
3. The Narnia Chronicles by C.S. Lewis
I got this as a gift in May of 2016 and I have yet to read the whole series. Which is pathetic on my part because the books are stupid thin. I'm currently up to the fifth book The Silver Chair and I definitely don't like this book as much as the ones I've read before so damn. The only reason I'm reading this series is because this year is the first time I've seen all the Narnia movies (I know, I know). And so I obviously have to read all the books. The books are so much more child-like as opposed to the movies. But 2017 I will read the rest of Narnia! (hopefully)
4. The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater
At the end of 2016 I fell in LOVE with the first book of this series. I am in love love love. The Raven Boys is a story unlike anything I have ever read before. I don't even know how to explain it. It's like fantasy story, a ghost story and a contemporary all wrapped into one. I just love love love what I've read of this series so far. I was so scared I wouldn't like it because I'm not a clairvoyant story kind of woman but I enjoyed that haunting aspect. I hope I don't fall into the trap of putting off reading this because I do really enjoy it!
5. Lady Midnight and Lord of the Shadows by Cassandra Clare
I have been putting off reading Lady Midnight because I am so scared that once I finish it I will go into a deep depression because there's no more books in the series that have been released yet. But this year, Lord of the Shadows will be coming out OH MY OH MY! I'm excited for this I am. But this does mean that once I read both Lady Midnight and Lord of the Shadows I'll have to wait until 2019 for the last book. Which just makes me want to cry. Side note: 2019 is also the year that Episode IX of Star Wars comes out so it is a BIG year! And I turn 21 but Star Wars is bigger than that.
6. Lorali by Laura Dockrill
Any book about mermaids has got me like YAS. I love reading about mermaids. If I could be a mermaid, I would be a mermaid. I love the water so when I heard of Lorali, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Lorali basically tells the story of a mermaid washing up on this guys beach and he's like what the hell. And that drew me in and I NEED to read it.
7. The Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver
This was on my 2016 TBR and it's safe to say that I did not end up reading this (oops). But I do remember reading it in 2015 and being like WOW this is a good book. So I know it's a good series I just need to push myself to FINISH IT.
8. Royal Tour from the The Potion Diaries Series by Amy Alward
I read the first book in this series in one sitting and it was one of the most enticing and adventurous books I had ever read. I love that in this book series, the main character isn't the one with magic in a magical world. But rather she's an alchemist who's power is the knowledge to create potions for the people. This is the second book in the series and I am looking forward to finding out where Amy takes the series!
Here's hoping that in 2017, I manage to read all the books in my TBR!
Happy New Year and here's hoping 2017 is a great year!
Much Love
