From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon // Book Review

Image
Sandhya Menon's newest young adult read is all about culture, high school friendships and first love. It tells a one-of-a-kind story that is sure to make you bawl your eyes out. (Which I can confirm - I did). Aspiring filmmaker Twinkle Mera has spent her whole life with a crush on Neil Roy. This all begins to change when she begins to work on a film with his twin, Sahil. And not only is she navigating her confusing love life, but also navigating her high school friendship circle with (but more like without) her best friend Maddie. Similarly to many real life high-school students, Twinkle just wants to find her way through friendship groups, popular cliques and the boys in her life. Sandhya Menon has done a great job of creating a realistic high school setting. Too often main characters of young adult novels, feature the popular girl without a care in the world and a sure ride to college. Twinkle is the exact opposite. Her best friend Maddie has become friends with what Twin...

I See London, I See France by Sarah Mlynowski // Book Review

Image
I See London, I See France  by Sarah Mlynoski is the perfect book for a summer read. When it seems like all your friends are going to Europe and you've got the biggest case of FOMO, it is time to pick up this book. Scattered with journeys from all over Europe, you won't feel like you're missing a thing! Sydney is spending her first summer in college, travelling through Europe with her childhood best friend Leela. Unfortunately her plans have been thwarted when Leela's cheating ex-boyfriend (and his very, VERY hot friend), turn up on the same travel cycle. It doesn't help that all Sydney can worry about is the fact that she's left her mother who suffers from a mental illness, back home with her little sister. Sydney just wants to find the balance between planning things out, and letting go. This book made me feel like I was right there in Europe with all the characters. Reading through Sydney's adventures will make you feel the need to kick your feet up a...

2016; A Year in (Book) Review & 2017 ULTIMATE TBR

Image
So, I have a  list of books  that I wanted to read in 2016. And I decided to do a follow up blog post to see what I've done this year. I can't believe that it's 2017. I still think it's 2014 and I'm still in high school. And I have my 2017 TBR for you which hopefully I manage to actually get all read this year! I haven't done a good job of reading what was on my TBR in 2016, I'll be honest. I just got sidetracked with reading other things (see The Mortal Instruments). But I did read some of the books on my list. 1. The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner I tried to read this series. And from memory I got through 30 pages before I just couldn't read anymore. The slang and language the character's use is so confusing. I don't understand what they are trying to say and I feel as if I need a glossary of terms to understand their slang. Maybe I will try to read this book again but right now I prefer the movies. 2. To All The Boys I've Lov...

February: Read, Reading and To Be Read

Image
Hi I love being so free that I can listen to the Star Wars soundtracks and read for hours by the pool. I have been reading some GREAT books. They've made me cry, made me laugh out loud and made me scream and that's how you know you've read a good book. Read This month I read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I feel as if this book is a classic although it's  not old enough to be a classic. I can just see in one hundred years, this book will be regarded as a classic. It's told from media res with a first person point of view from Amir. We first get to hear about how someone's called him to come back to Kabul and he realises that it's time for him to go back to the place he once called home. Then we jump to the past and of his childhood in the 1970's. Amir grows up in a rich household with his father Baba and their servants Ali and his son Hassan. The book focuses specially on Amir's friendship with Hassan and the class differences between t...

Book Review; Carry On

Image
Hey hey hey! Oh look another book review about a Rainbow Rowell novel. The only other book review I've ever done on my blog was a Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and really I should write a book review on a book by a different author but really I read Carry On and nearly burst out in tears just out of a mixture of confusionism (I'm aware this isn't an actual word), happiness and awe. It's just really easy to review because there are so many layers to this novel. If you haven't read any of my other blog posts on books (because recently I have mentioned this book in EVERY single post and even I'm telling myself to shut up), then you will be unaware that this is a spin-off from Fangirl , however . It is the fan fiction that the main character writes and it's Harry Potter fan fiction essentially. Unspoiler Edition:  It is Simon Snow's final year at Watford's School of Magik (YES, that's how it's spelt) and his life is a mess. I mean seriousl...

January: Read, Reading and To Be Read

Image
Hello! This is actually the books I've read in December but I'm being cheeky and uploading it in January hehe. Hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas/New Year and that 2016 brings you all the best. Read The book I have read is Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. I've spoken about this in my book haul and well it is quite a good book. Picoult's writing is so intricate that it continues with such a rhythmic flow that it's impossible to not enjoy her writing. This book is about Delia, who lives a charmed life. She lives with her daughter, her father and is soon to be married to her fiance, Eric and alongside them, their best friend, Fitz. Soon she learns that the life she holds dear, is not the whole truth. Her father gets arrested for kidnapping Delia from her mother when she was younger. Delia comes to learn that she's not really Delia but is actually Bethany who's mother didn't die when she was four. This is not the typical book that I would us...

October: Read, Reading and To Be Read

Image
Despite the fact that I have got so much studying to be doing and whatnot, I somehow managed to read books and will probably read more books. Do not follow my example. It's been a month of very lightweight reading because of my exams. My head can barely handle the capacity of the Russian Revolution. Read: The book that I have read this month is a book I picked up at the library one day when I was studying there. I just wanted to read it because I was going crazy trying to study. I read Katie Lender's, Marie Antoinette Serial Killer . It's a very different type of book then I'd usually read. It's a horror, mystery, contemporary type novel. It focuses on Colette Iselin's high school trip to Paris, France. Every girl's dream right? Unfortunately for Colette, her dream trip is haunted by the ghost of Marie Antoinette who seems to be responsible for the murders happening around Paris. Whilst the primary focus is the mystery, there's also focuses on r...

August: Read, Reading & To Be Read

Image
Hello! My inner bookworm usually hibernates during the school term but recently it's come out like the social butterfly I am! It has been thrilling, so I thought I'd share with you three books; one I have finished reading, one I'm in the middle of reading and one I've yet to read but will start reading this month Read: The book that I have finished reading is The Well by Elizabeth Jolley. I had to read this book for school and let me tell you, it was haunting! It's a Gothic novel and I don't mean Gothic, dress style Gothic, I mean Gothic as in genre Gothic. The book is about an elderly woman named Hester Harper and the young girl she adopts named Katherine (I don't know if adopt is the right word because she sort of just brings her home and labels her as her own) Eventually Hester gets older and so does Katherine and things start to change. Not to mention Hester's sexuality too. No one, even Hester knows what she wants in terms of gender. This is j...
