The Best Books I've Ever Read
CALLING ALL BOOKWORMS!!
Books make up my life. There is nothing more comforting for me to just sit down in the sun, on a Sunday and read a good book. I hardly get the chance to read because I am a student. That always makes reading so much better for me though. It makes me appreciate reading much more than I normally would. In my years of reading, I have acquired many books which have made me feel like a million bucks. If you're as bookish as me, you know the feeling of finishing a really good book and feeling like you're heart is a little bit more complete. (Maybe I'm just crazy, there's a good chance of that too) So I want to share with you, all the books that have left me feeling a little bit more complete. Books make me too soppy, I'm never like this.
1. Animal Farm by George Orwell
This is a classic, you may have heard of this already because it is pretty popular. I had to read this for my English class in year 10 and since then it has been one of my favourites. If you don't already know, the book is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. I'm not expert on the Russian Revolution, but all of the characters in the book represent a character or a group of people during this time in Russia. The book is about a farm full of animals and how they overthrow the humans and start their own system of government. If you have no idea what the Russian Revolution is, I'll give you a run down. From 1603 to 1917, Russia had been ruled by the Romanov family, the last leader being Tsar Nicholas II. The social structure was not exactly fair, the peasants made up 80% of the population and were not paid enough money in ratio to how much they worked. Eventually the Bolsheviks (a Marxist party to put it simply) come into power and the country was infiltrated with Communism and Joseph Stalin eventually became ruler. Orwell disagrees with the way Stalin ruled, which is evident in the novel. Orwell was also turned down by many publishers because the book at the time was so controversial but he did end up getting it published and it is now an iconic book. So if anything it shows that determination and believing in yourself gets you somewhere!
2. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
This is and will always be my favourite books in the world. If there was an apocalypse, I'd make sure I'd save these books. If you haven't heard of them, although literally everyone has, they are about a young orphaned boy who lives with his uncle and auntie discovers he's a wizard. Later on he discovers his parents were killed by the evil Dark Lord, Voldemort and the series is basically his quest to destroy him whilst obviously growing up and becoming an adult and whatnot. If you are questioning reading this book, DON'T. I'm not really into fantasy books but one day after my exams I was walking around the house aimlessly doing nothing, bothering my mother. She got sick of my shit so she told me to go read a book and told me to go read Harry Potter. And from then on I was hooked. I read the 1st book in a day and the last one in less than a day. Rowling is a really talented writer and I recommend these books to everyone! If you're not sure you could always watch the movies first. Also this series, whilst having a male main character, contains some of the most powerful women. If you've read the series, you'll know what I mean but the women in this book are inspiring. I could write a whole blog post about how freaking great they are, they're that good.
3. Smitten Series by Kate Forster and Julia Fison
I've spoken about this series in my Summer favourites because really this series has just made me believe in stupid love. (Definition of Stupid Love: Love that's so amazing really we all know it'd never happen in real life) I've really struggled to find a romance novel (or in this case novels) that I've really liked because they're all too bland and lovey dovey for me. This is lovey too but it's written really well. Like I said in my Summer favourites, these usually have a happy ending. And I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I love reading books where there is a happy ending. Once again like I said in my Summer favourites, I really like the ones written by Kate Forster more than the ones written by Julia Fison just by preference.
4. Mallory Towers by Enid Blyton
These are probably the books that got me into reading. I read these when I was in Year 4 I'm pretty sure, so that's when I was about 9. Basically I was running around the bookstore, reading the back of EVERY book and I stumbled upon these. Then I demanded that I buy them to my parents and they spent about $100 buying me every single book in the series. I think they were happy I was doing something that wasn't jumping up and down and/or watching the television. The series is about a young girl that goes away to a boarding school called Mallory Towers and the adventures and mischief they get up to there. Ever since I read this, I've wanted to go away to Boarding School and then I read Harry Potter and I wanted to live in Hogwarts. I know I'm a little crazy. I read this series over and over again that I have lost count of how many times I have read it. I still pick it up once a while today even though it has been almost 10 years since I have first read the series.
5. The 5 People you meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
I read this because I was assigned this in my Book Club (Yes, I've hit peak nerd and I am damn proud) and I fell in love with it and I could not put it down. It was one of the books that I stayed up all night to finish reading it and it was totally worth it. It's about an old man who has died in a freak accident and before he enters the afterlife, Heaven, Hell, whatever you want to call it, he meets 5 people who he has encountered in his own life who have all died. The guy is pretty lonely and to put it simply is pretty much done and ready to go because he misses his family and his wife and everything. Albom is a magnificent writer and really the ending of the book leaves you feeling so satisfied.
6. Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin
I have read so many books from these series you would not believe it. I used to drag my mum to the Salvation Army stores or Secondhand bookshops to buy these because you couldn't find them anywhere else. I have so many of these books on my bookshelf because I was obsessed with them. They're about a group of friends who start a babysitting business and this is them getting new members, going through high school, outgrowing friendships, dealing with family problems and boy problems all whilst baby sitting. It's a series I really enjoyed reading when I was younger because the books are thin and when you're as impatient as I am, that is helpful.
7. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
And lastly behold, the most eerie and Gothic fiction of all time. Literally this book is written with such Literature genius and a beautiful plot, I had to mention it. When people say Frankenstein most people think monster but Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein to be precise, is actually the creator of the monster. The monster itself has no name. The book is about Victor Frankenstein who tries to defy every single natural law known to human and create life. Which he does manage to do except he is so disgusted by his own creation, he ends up leaving it alone causing it to go on a rampage and kill everyone. The book contains so many themes and it's just such literary genius. Shelley herself was a little crazy (she tried to shut her head in her oven and kept her dead husband's heart) but all is fair in the world of Literature. The book is a classic and really is worth a good read.
Currently reading: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Books that I would like to read in the future: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
If you can't tell, I really like books. When in doubt, read a book
